A little over six years ago, Chris and I moved to Omaha, NE. We moved here because I wanted to be closer to my parents and we were excited about the idea of new city.

We love Omaha. It's big enough to offer everything we would want.
And small enough to not feel crowded.

But our home is Lawrence, Kansas.
That's where we went to school. Met. Married, Bought our first home, had our first baby.
Our closest friends still live in and around Lawrence.

I love that town. So cute and a great mix of people and events.

I wanted to represent our "home" in our current home.

I have seen wooden state signs all over on Pinterest here lately. And I love them.
And I wanted one!

So I had the hubby screw a few boards together for me.

My first coat of paint was white - I didn't even give it time to dry and then did a coast of the green and yellow with a damp brush. It thinned the paint out to just the right consistency for me.

I first drew the shape of the state (Kansas) out in pencil.
With a thin brush, I started on the outline.

With the outline done, I started filling it in.

This was a scary project for me!
I am not a painter at all. I also have shaky hands - so wasn't sure if I would like how it turned out.
But I think I did pretty good.

I went over the state with a dry brush to pull up any extra paint, and to give it a aged look.

I was very impressed with my ability to paint a word.
And have it be legible.

The heart when right about where Lawrence is at.

I am in love with the finished product.
I can't wait to find a place for this in our living room!

Lovin' these blogs...

If you want to take a break from boxed mac & cheese.
They try this one...
it's sooo good
and sooo cheesy!
The kids and adults loved it.

1. Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain well.
2. Make your roux - I used 3 TBSP of butter with 3 TBSP of flour.
I added about 3 cups of milk and started mixing in my cheese. I used the cheese from the Kraft Fresh Take package, the Kroger cheese sauce (like the kind you use for chips and dip) and about a cup of parmesean cheese.
(Add more or less milk to get the consistancy that you like.)
Make sure and add plenty of salt and pepper. Taste as you go along.

3. Toss the pasta back in. Stir well.
4. Put the cheesy pasta into a large casserole dish. I topped mine with crushed cheese crackers then with the about half of the Fresh Take Rosemary & Roasted Garlic Seasoning (yum!)
5. Put in the oven, under the broiler, until the top is a nice golden brown.

I had never made homemade mac and cheese that tasted this good!

Going on vacation to Iowa might not seem very fun to most.
Okoboji is different.

It's a lake community...full of great resorts, boating, restaurants.
And is a great place to take a family.

My family went there alot when I was a kid.
My whole family would go - grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.
For me, this place is full of memories.

If you're looking for a family vacation, with plenty of relaxing involved
Okoboji is a perfect place

You can spend some time in the house of mirrors.

Lots of great lake side restaurant's to choose from.

Lake swimming

Mini Golf (he got a hole-in-one here!)

With Okoboji - you can go as cheap or as expensive as you want.
They have great resorts all over that have all types of amenities, but they also have cheap hotels and campgrounds too.

We spend four days there, and had a great time!

Last week, I posted about my experiences with TeeSpring.com
Have you checked them out yet?

I really love TeeSpring.
Two weeks ago, all the neighbor kids had a lemonade stand to raise money for their Vacation Bible School.
They made $40 in two days.
Great for a lemonade stand...but I imagine that if one of the kids had designed a t-shirt -
we could have blown the roof off of that $40!
Parents would have loved a t-shirt design of something their kids made!

School fundraisers also come to mind.
I'm going to bring it up to our PTA about having a drawing contest.
The kid that wins get their drawing on a t-shirt for all the parents to buy.
I think that would be a great money-maker for our school.
Way better then wrapping paper!

I love that with TeeSpring - you don't spend a dime up front.
Or ever.
The people that buy your shirts, they're the only ones spending any money.

Check out this great YouTube video about TeeSpring...

Make sure and check out my shirts I made....

If you've created your own campaign - make sure and leave a link it the comments for me!
I'd love to see your designs and maybe own a few!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

I could be completely not hungry.
Not hungry at all.
Then I start watching Food Network or reading through some of my favorite food blogs.
And all of a sudden I'm starving.

Last night, I wanted cookies!
But it was 10:45 pm
I really did not feel like whipping out flour and butter....then take 45 minutes to make cookies.

That is...until I remembered that I have have my moms peanut butter cookie recipe!
So easy, three ingredients.

So I threw the peanut butter, sugar and eggs in the mixer really quick and made some cookies!
The kids are long asleep by now...and my hubby works overnights.
So it was just me.
All by myself.

The beauty of that...is that I don't have to fight anyone who who gets to lick the peanut butter spoon.
(Finally! It's all mine!)

I did not try to make pretty cookies.
At 10:45 pm...no one cares about pretty cookies.

And if you give me cookies.....
you know I'll need...
a glass of chocolate milk.

The Craft of Making the Perfect Chocolate Milk
Step One: Pour

Step Two: Squeeze until you can't squeeze no more.

Step Three: Stir
(no spoons needed here...a fork works best)

By the way....like my glass?
Nope, not a real "Red Solo Cup"
I bought it at Target off the dollar bins.
Love them!

Chocolate Milk. Done.
Step Four: Drink

Now, we sit and wait for the cookies to be done.
(You can follow me on Instagram too!)

Cookies are done!
Now it's time to go drink chocolate milk and eat cookies in bed while watching a Lifetime Movie!
Hello!?
Perfect Sunday night!

Vacations can be complete budget busters!
When we go on vacation, like we did last week
we have set aside a certain amount of money just for the vacation.

I've found some strategies to help us stick to our budget and I thought I'd share them with you today.

1. Write a budget long before the trip
Decide how much you can afford to spend.
AFFORD.
Not put on the credit card.
How much can you afford to spend.
Cash Money.
Vacations don't have to be expensive to be fun.
Our week-long vacation cost $500.
Yep!
You can us a plan sheet of paper to write your budget, or use this handy Vacation Budget sheet from Living Well Spending Less.
Make sure and keep this list with you ALWAYS while you are on vacation.
Cash...use cash on your trip...much easier to keep track of your spending with cash.

2. Locations
Vacations don't have to be tropical or Disney World or across the ocean to be fun.
Ask friends and neighbors about great local attractions...or google "Visit ___(your state name)____" and you'll most likely be able to order a free visitors guide to your state of choice.
Our recent vacation was only 3 hours away...which meant we saved by not having air fare and it took less then a full tank of gas to get us there.

3. Where to Stay
Personally, we enjoy camping. We bought a small pop-up camper a few years ago (for less then $2,000) and love using it. Camp sites...in the Midwest...are usually under $35 a night.
If camping isn't your thing, you can save a ton by not staying in a fancy resort or the "it" hotel. Check out campgrounds to see if they have cabins for rent.
How about motels? They may not be really pretty to look at from the outside...but as long as they're clean, I don't care. When I'm on vacation, I don't spend much time in my hotel room anyways!

4. What to Do While Your There
Google the city you're visiting. Check out their online visitors center.
Look up and price out attractions that you're family would enjoy.
Narrow down the attractions based on your budget.
For most vacations, one or two attractions a day is enough for the kids.
Don't do something if it'll bust the budget!

5. Time to Eat
The major benefit of camping is making your own meals. You can do something easy like hamburgers or hot dogs or go all out. We ate dinner at our campsite all but one night. For a family of four in a resort town, that easily saved us $150+!
For lunches, we packed picnics most days. A couple loafs of bread, lunch meat and cheese, chips and fruit and we were ready. (Don't forget ice packs to keep it all cold!) Then each day, we would find a new spot to eat our lunch...a nice park, the beach, where ever. That probably saved us another $120.
I also pack snacks for the kids. We did go out for snacks twice and it was a great treat!
A great tip for eating out is to find out where to locals eat! It's usually much cheaper then the main tourist places.

6. Keep Track
Like I said before...bring cash. It's so easy to over spend it you're using your bank card.
We always just keep our budget tracker sheet on a clipboard in the car.
Spend $20 in ice cream?
Cross it off the budget!
It really made it all stress-free for me.

What are your tips for sticking to a budget while on vacation?
We rarely travel by plane, so I'd love some tips for saving there!

Thanks so much for stopping by!
