My oldest son has been having a hard time in school learning what the different coins were. They learn cute songs and practice, but he still had't quite 'got it' yet. So, we grabbed some money flash cards and started practicing. The problem? He still wasn't getting it. I was about to pull my hair out, when this idea hit me....a cheat sheet.

I had to work with what I had at the moment, a cardboard box in the recycling bin - all we did was glue the coins onto the box - front and back - and then had Ashton write out what each coin was and how much it was worth.

With his money flash cards, he could compare coins and see right away how much each coin was worth.

He went from being frustrated and about to give up - to being happy that he was getting it!

No, I don't agree with cheating. But, since I made this cheat sheet for him - it's working!

After just a few nights of using his cheat sheet, I removed it and he's remembering all the coins!! Makes a mom proud!

Any tips to share on helping kids learn their coins?

My oldest son got a hold of my camera sometime this week. I went to down load pictures and this is what I found:

Self Portrait

Picture of his antique pedal car

His favorite movie

His basketball hoop

His favorite team

Moms FAVORITE TV show

And one more self portrait....just in case I forgot who took all these pictures!

Do you love Pioneer Woman as much as I do?

I love reading Ree's daily posts. She seems like such a sweet person. I really love finding new recipes on her site. We eat Chicken Spaghetti at least 3 times a month! Seriously. That stuff is good.

I've tried several recipes out of her cookbook and they were all amazing. I now have a whole new way of making pot roast that it way better then the way I use to do it. I'm in love with her chicken fried steak and we love love love those cinnamon and sugar muffin things. I gave some to the neighbor last time I made them...I thought she was going to kiss me she was so happy to get them.

But, in all this time that I've owned Ree's cookbook The Pioneer Woman Cooks, the cinnamon rolls have always scared me. I've never really tried to make homemade, from scratch bread. I make bread from the bread machine all the time. But never from scratch.

I've spend the last couple of years pouring over that cookbook over and over again and always looking at the recipe for the cinnamon rolls but never having the balls to really make them. The doubts would roll through my head.

It'll take hours to make those. When will I find that kind of time?
What if I screw it all up? I'll have wasted all that time and energy?
Who will I serve 40+ cinnamon rolls to?
I can't make bread! Are you crazy!

All these doubts would roll through my head. Until last weekend. I decided to bite the bullet and just do it.

You need a ton of milk and flour to make those, so I went to the store and bought what I needed. I figured if I had everything I would need, there would be no excuse to NOT make them.

I told my husband my intentions. He didn't have the doubts I did. He was just excited to have some fresh baked cinnamon rolls.

So, I moved on.

I mixed and waited and rolled and waited.
I melted butter and floured and measured.

When all was said and done. It had really only taken me a little over an hour (other then the hour of rising - but I don't count that since I left for a bit during this stage). But I did it. The table was covered in flour and butter and sugar and cinnamon. The kitchen was a wreck. But I did it.

I was so proud. Really. I was beaming.

I put the first batch in the oven. My oldest son kept running upstairs asking if they were done yet.

I was getting nervous. What if they are gross? I probably added too much sugar or not enough cinnamon. Oh no.

The first batch came out, I poured the frosting and cut the first bites for everyone.

They were heavenly. Pure heaven.

I had tamed the beast.

I ended up taking a batch to the neighbors and a pan to our church group. Everyone raved. Everyone told me how brave I was to go after the Pioneer Women cinnamon rolls. Apparently I wasn't the only one who was scared.

I'm glade I pushed myself. I need to learn to trust my skills more then I do. I'm sure I have some other beasts that need to be tamed.

What are some beasts that you need to tame? What's holding you back?

I wanted to take a minute to share with your the beauty products that have completely changed my skin. Even thought I'm in my (early) thirties, I still have acne. I've had it since I was a pre-teen. It's never been too horribly bad, but it's always been there.

As a teenager and into my early twenties, I would wear so much makeup to try and cover it up. I went to Dr's and got medications and creams - and they would work for a while and then quit and I'd be back to where I started. It wasn't until about two years ago that I started doing some research to find out why my skin was still so acne prone.

What I found it that it could be all sorts of things - foods that I'm allergic to, chemicals in the products that I use, genetic factors, air pollutants and more. Basically, I found out that I couldn't control all the reasons why my skin looked the way it did. So I decided to seek out products that would use less chemicals, makeups that were good for my skin and watch what types of foods I ate and drank.

I tried other products and weren't impressed. These all have made the final cut. These are the best products that I've seen that fit my budget and make my skin look amazing. My skin is now smooth and soft, and the acne has went away. I wear less make up now and am (for the first time) comfortable leaving the house without make up on!!!

Here's what I've been using:

I found out through my research that even oily, acne prone skin needs a good moisturizer. I use this about 3 times a week on my neck and chest area and about twice a week on my face or more if I'm noticing dry patches.

My skin is weird in that if I use Proactiv everyday, it gets really dry and patchy, so I only use this about 3 times a week. I've also found that I can only use the toner about once a week. But, this is what works for me. I love the cleanser because it has those scrubbing beads in it that keep the dry skin from building up.

I bought this because a friend of mine talked about it so much that I just had to try it. This facial peel is the most amazing stuff ever. It smells fantastic and is so gentle on my skin. I use this about every other week as it works even better to get rid of dry skin.

I really loves masks. I think it's a great excuse to hang out in the bathtub for a long time. This Moroccan Red Clay Powder pulls out the dirt and grime from my pores and leaves my skin feeling amazing. A little of this goes a long way! You mix it with water at home, at about $6 for an container, this is a great deal.

I love this lotion. It's non-greasy, has enough SPF for me and doesn't clog pores. And, at only $4 a bottle it's way cheaper then alot of face lotions out there. I love EVERYTHING Trader Joe's!

For years, I would never even bother using eye makeup remover. Whenever I would wash my face, I would just scrub under my eyes with which ever bar soap I was using. Dumb, I know. It suggests using a cotton ball, but you can simply put a small amount of this liquid on your ring finger - swipe it around your eye and it's all gone. I love this stuff.

This is a product that I had for awhile (it came with shipment that I got as a free trial item.) When it said "skin  lightening" I automatically thought it would bleach my skin. But I looked into it some more about found that this cream is suppose to lighten old acne scars. I, unfortunately, had a number of these. So I gave this stuff a try. It took about a month to really notice a difference but such a small amount is needed for your face that this small bottle has lasted me a long time. When I first started using it, I put it on every day. Now that my face is clear, I use it only about once or twice a week for maintenance.

We've come to the TOP DOG of facial products in my book....right here. If you have acne prone skin or just oily skin Nelsons is the way to go. This stuff drys out my skin without drying it out.....does that make sense? My skin is not oily...ever. I use to have to reapply makeup a few times a day because it would literally slide off my skin, but after using this amazing gel - my whole life has changed! (ha ha) But, seriously this is the creme da la creme!

What skin care products have changed your life?

Can you believe that Valentines Day is on Tuesday? I have so much that needs to be done before then. It's going to be craziness for the next few days until I get everything done.

Yesterday I went to the "planning committee" for my oldest son's school Valentines Day party.

Yes. They have a committee for planning parties. And, I'm on it.

Basically, it's just a bunch of moms that get together one night, have some food together and swap ideas. It's actually kind of fun.

Here's my to-do this for this week:
  • Get Ashton to decide what "theme" he wants for his Valentines Day mailbox for school
  • Get Ashton to be interested enough in his "theme" to make him sit down and decorate his box for more then 5 minutes
  • Have Ashton fill out all of his Valentines for his classmates
  • Paint his heart necklaces that he made and attach ribbon to each of them
  • Plan a meal for Valentines Day, I'm going with a "red" theme. I just have to figure out what all I'm going to serve
  • Buy Chris' Valentines Day gift. We've decided to wait and celebrate when the kids spend an extended weekend at my parents house (late February) but we're going to exchange very small gifts on Monday
  • Help Ashton and Colton make a Valentines Day card for Chris and their Grandparents (and get them in the mail in plenty of time)
  • Write out my own Valentines Day card for my family and get them stuck in the mail (must do this by Friday)
  • Finish buying the kids Valentines Day gifts and get them wrapped and ready to go
  • Think of a cute breakfast for the boys on Monday
Phew! That's a lot to do in a couple of days!

If you're running a bit behind like I am or are looking for a really cute gift for your hubby or kids, check out the Valentine's Day Cards by Tiny Prints. . They have a beautiful selection of Valentines Day cards for everyone on your list and they will send the cards right to them. It saves a ton of time!

Here are some that I like for Chris:

Ha ha...love this one. On some days, this is all he talks about!

If I gave this one to Chris, he would know that I really do love him alot.
(Because he knows I can't resist a cupcake!)

I'm in love with this card. So simple and sweet.

We always like to send cards to our kids too, it's such a huge deal for them to get mail. I love the selection of kids cards from Tiny Prints too....

Since Ashton loves his video games, this would be a perfect card for him.

And, I love this sweet card for my baby Colton.

Ahh...now I feel all weepy and sweet just thinking about Valentines Day. I get the best handmade cards and kisses from the boys. I love Valentines Day. =)

What are you doing for Valentines Day?
What's the best gift that you'll get?

Chris and I were invited to our first Super Bowl Party in years and years. He was really excited about having some guys to watch the game with, the kids were excited to be able to play with the other kids. Me? I was excited about thinking what dish I would bring.

I poured over Follow Me on Pinterest and wanted to find something that would feed roughly 12-15 people and would be cheap and easy to make. And, would be something that guys and kids alike would want to eat. While I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for....here's what I came up with...

Sloppy Joe Bowls

First, you'll need two tubes of biscuits. They have the larger "Grands" style too, but I thought those would be too big, so I bought the el-cheapo $0.50 biscuits.

Next, take some cooking spray and spray the inside of your muffin tins. They do not need a heavy coating of spray, one small spray in each tin will do just fine. Otherwise the biscuits will slide down.

Go ahead and preheat your oven to 400 degrees.

There are two ways you could do this next step. The biscuits need to be flatted into a large circle. You could do this with your hands (see above) or with a rolling pin (see below). If you do it with your hands make sure and have a small bowl of flour available because the dough can get a little sticky when it starts to warm up.

I found it to be the easiest to roll them with a rolling pin. The dough doesn't get warmed by your hands and it's quicker.

Next, place your biscuits into the muffin tin. Pull the dough up along the sides to form your bowl.

They don't have to look perfect - flaws just add character.

Place your bowls in the oven for one minute. When you pull them out, you'll notice that the dough has already started to rise. I took a spoons and pushed it back down into the bowl shape that I wanted. This is how they'll look:

Place the bowls back into the oven. Bake them in two minute intervals until browned on the edges. Mine took a total of 6 minutes to bake.

Take a spoon and pop them out of the muffin tin.

I was so pleased with how these turned out! I let mine rest on the counter till they were completely cooled and then put them into a storage bag on the counter overnight. I wanted to make sure the bread was hard enough to hold up to some hearty sloppy joe mix.

Now, for the sloppy joes. I don't have my own recipe for sloppy joes or any special way that I make mine.

I use a mix.

I'm ashamed to say it, but it's true.

Here's what I use.

I am in love with the Simply Organic Sloppy Joe Mix. It's available at Whole Foods, at some Target stores and online through Amazon. My whole family loves the taste of this mix and I like that it has organic ingredients. But, for this any sloppy joe mix (as long as it's not too watery) would work perfectly.

Anyways, so I just follow the directions on the packet and away I go!

When you're done mixing your sloppy joe mix, starting filling up your mini bread bowls. I put a small pinch of shredded cheddar cheese on the bottom of each bowl to make sure they were extra cheesy!

Then top them with cheese. Make sure and serve them warm. After filling the mini bowls and topping with the sloppy joe mix, place them back into a 350 degree oven for a few minutes until the cheese is melted.

I'm so happy with how these turned out!

(These were a huge hit on Sunday with everyone!)
